Facial Recognition and Social Media Help Reunite Families at Kumbh

The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 has seen the successful application of AI facial recognition and social media tools in reuniting thousands of individuals separated from their families. Given the scale of the event, losing track of family members is a common occurrence—but this year, technology has made a huge difference.

Authorities have established a digital “Khoya-Paya Kendra” (Lost and Found Center) powered by facial recognition software linked to high-resolution AI-enabled CCTV cameras spread across the mela grounds. Once someone is reported missing, their description or photo is uploaded to the system, which then scans live footage to identify and locate them.

In a widely shared success story, a child separated from his parents was identified using camera data and facial matching and was reunited with his family within three hours. The incident was posted on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), and the post quickly went viral, drawing attention to the effectiveness of this system.

The initiative has gained praise from civil society organizations and public safety experts for combining traditional policing with cutting-edge technology. It's being hailed as a model for future mass gatherings around the world.
