From April 13 to 18, 2025, India and nine African nations conducted the inaugural Africa-India Key Maritime Engagement (AIKEYME) naval exercise in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. The participating countries included Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, and South Africa. The exercise aimed to enhance interoperability among the navies and strengthen diplomatic and operational ties.
The exercise comprised two phases: the Harbour Phase (April 13–15) and the Sea Phase (April 16–18). During the Harbour Phase, activities included table-top and command post exercises focused on anti-piracy operations, information sharing, and joint training in seamanship and Visit Board Search and Seizure (VBSS) simulations. The Sea Phase involved drills, search and rescue operations, small arms training, and helicopter operations.
Indian Navy ships INS Chennai and INS Kesari participated in the exercise, which is part of India's broader initiative to enhance maritime security and cooperation in the Indian Ocean region. The AIKEYME exercise underscores India's commitment to fostering strong maritime partnerships with African nations.
