Gujarat Bids to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games

On January 30, 2025, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel met with Commonwealth Games Federation Vice-President Chris Jenkins in Gandhinagar to discuss Gujarat's bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The proposed plan includes hosting 30 sport disciplines, utilizing existing and planned infrastructure such as the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave and the Naranpura Sports Complex. A new sports complex in Karai is also planned, featuring a 50,000-capacity athletics stadium, a 5,000-capacity indoor arena, and a shooting range.

The bid is seen as a stepping stone towards India's aspiration to host the 2036 Summer Olympics. Commonwealth Games Federation CEO Katie Sadleir expressed support for India's bid, highlighting it as a significant move towards achieving the Olympic goal. The bid requires approval from the Indian federal government before a formal proposal can be submitted. If successful, this would mark India's second time hosting the Commonwealth Games, the first being in Delhi in 2010
