India Launches Operation Brahma: Humanitarian Aid to Earthquake-Hit Myanmar

In response to the devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar in March 2025, India initiated "Operation Brahma" on March 28, 2025, to provide immediate humanitarian assistance. Led by the Indian Army, the operation aimed to deliver urgent medical care, including emergency treatments, trauma management, and surgical interventions to those affected. A specialized medical task force was deployed, and a 200-bed field hospital was established in Mandalay by the Shatrujeet Brigade Medical Responders, airlifted by two Boeing C-17 Globemaster III aircraft.

The Indian Navy dispatched five ships—INS Satpura, INS Savitri, IN LCU 52, INS Karmuk, and INS Gharial—carrying a total of 440 tonnes of relief materials, including rice, edible oil, and medicines, to Yangon. Additionally, the Indian Air Force deployed six aircraft to deliver aid to Yangon, Naypyitaw, and Mandalay. An 80-member search and rescue team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was also deployed across more than a dozen sites in Mandalay.

The operation, named after the Hindu god of creation, Brahma, symbolizes India's commitment to rebuilding and supporting neighboring countries in times of crisis. Operation Brahma follows India's tradition of providing disaster relief, similar to previous initiatives like Operation Maitri (Nepal earthquake, 2015) and Operation Dost (Turkey-Syria earthquakes, 2023)
